Fallout 4 is Getting a Free PS5 and Xbox Series X/S Upgrade

To celebrate Fallout’s 25th anniversary
by Joe Wilcock on October 25, 2022

Bethesda has announced a free next-generation upgrade for Fallout 4 in celebration of the series’ 25th birthday. The PS5, Xbox Series X/S and the PC will all receive an updated version of the apocalypse which features higher frame rates, 4K resolution capabilities and more. It is due to release sometime next year.

The announcement came by way of the official Fallout website, which also revealed special goodies for Fallout 76 including the anniversary challenge and bundle. As for Fallout 4, they’re excited to bring it to the current generation:

“Prepare for the future: A next-gen update is coming to Fallout 4! Coming in 2023, this free update will be available for Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5 and Windows PC systems, including performance mode features for high frame rates, quality features for 4K resolution gameplay, bug fixes and even bonus Creation Club content!”

- Bethesda

The occasion has given rise to some interesting anecdotes regarding the legacy and fate of Fallout. Tim Cain, the creator of the original Fallout all those years ago, commented on Bethesda taking the reigns of his beloved franchise:

"I kind of felt like my baby had been adopted by another family. It wasn’t so much that I didn’t like the family, it’s just, my baby was going to be raised differently than how I would raise this baby."

- Tim Cain, Lead Creator of the Original Fallout

The future of Fallout is a distant one, it seems likely there won’t be an entry in the series this generation as Bethesda plans to release it after Elder Scrolls VI. Obsidian Entertainment, developers of Fallout: New Vegas, has shown interest in developing another game but that remains a pipe dream for now.

"If we ever got the opportunity to make another Fallout game, we'd make it. There's not even a question of whether or not we would do it, it's just 'Will the opportunity arise?

At some point we'll start looking into what those next games are going to be, and I would be surprised if Fallout is not on that list. If we were to do Fallout, it has to tie in with what Bethesda is doing with Fallout and a lot of other things, but I would always personally say my hope is that before I ride off into the sunset, I'd love to make another Fallout game."

- Feargus Urquhart, Obsidian CEO and Co-Founder

For now, fans will have to make do with the shiny new Fallout 4 next year and the slew of Fallout 76 updates which continue to roll out.
